3 Days – 3 Stays – 4 Education

David Attenborough recently celebrated his 100th birthday. Over a remarkable 70-year television career, he has visited every continent and once reflected that his greatest discovery was understanding just how deeply connected all life on Earth truly is.

As the third generation at The Cavern, and having spent 25 years here myself, I am just over half his age but my knees already suggest 100 may be ambitious! Yet regardless of how long we are given, connection remains one of the most important parts of our existence. Not only for our sense of belonging, but for our health, wellbeing and the way we experience the world around us.

It’s interesting that when we look at the Blue Zones of the world – places where people tend to live longer with lower rates of chronic disease, certain common threads begin to emerge;
Whole foods.
Regular movement and exercise; something we embraced over our two days of hiking.
Strong connections through close family ties, community involvement and regular social interaction.
And importantly, a sense of purpose; a reason to get up each morning.

Perhaps true wellness is not found in any single secret, but rather in the simple, consistent ways we live, move, connect and contribute. In many ways, nature gently reminds us of this. Over the hiking weekend we came together as a community of hikers and we hiked with purpose, raising funds and it just so happens that the connections on the walks, the talks and social interactions are going to make us all live a little bit longer!

It takes friendship.
George & Simon hiked that very first Big5 and have walked beside us ever since, encouraging us, helping us refine ideas, offering guidance and support along the way. That kind of enduring friendship is something truly special.

It takes family.
The Carte Collection was born from resilient grandparents and a vision first planted in 1941. Today it continues through our teams at The Cavern, Sungubala and Montusi. It is the people who help create places of warmth, welcome and belonging.

It takes connection to the corporate world too.
Total Gateway. Melville Douglas. Rhino Polish. SORO.
Partnerships that help make ideas possible and allow meaningful projects to grow.

And then there is the wider community – our village of supporters.
Those who hiked the Big5 before. Those who discovered us through social media. Those who heard about us through friends of friends and found themselves here in these beautiful mountains, just like the Karoo Bikers.

It is the generosity of so many people that makes these gatherings possible.
Grant Pitcher, thank you for capturing the moments so beautifully.
To our wine suppliers; Spier, VDP Distributors, Neil Ellis Wines & Paint the Town Wine, thank you for helping make the experience memorable.

As a connected community, every step we take outdoors reminds us again of the beauty that surrounds us. As members of the Nature Reserve, we carry the responsibility of protecting this land for future generations. And as mothers, fathers and teachers, we must ensure that children remain fascinated by the natural world, growing up with a deep love and respect for the planet.

Because perhaps living longer and happier lives is not only about health, but also about purpose, belonging and connection.
